The first appointment with your Osteopath

If you have never visited an Osteopath before, here is a brief outline of what to expect.

The Osteopath will start with a history of your present complaint. The problem you have come with, when and how did it start and where it affects you, when you feel it and how it changes your normal activity. We are particularly interested in what aggravates or improves your condition, times or position when it is worse or better. You will be questioned about your general health and past medical history. Please bring the following information if you are on any prescription medication and any medical reports like X-ray or MRI scans relevant to your condition.

The second part of the consultation

The second part of the consultation is a thorough physical examination of the area of your complaint. It is common for this to include the whole body. Osteopaths believe in whole body health. Problems, particularly ones not giving any symptoms at the opposite end of the body, can be important. For example having one leg shorter than the other can change the shape of your spine and present with a headache condition. The examination may include orthopaedic or neurological testing for example having your reflexes tested.

For ease of examination it is normal to undress down to your underwear. If you are in pain please wear loose clothing which is easy to remove and appropriate underwear to avoid any embarrassment. If you have any particular concerns over the examination process please talk to your Osteopath who will try to be sensitive to your needs.
